Northern Line Overview

London Underground’s Northern Line crosses the English capital city from the north to the south. It connects the suburbans areas of Barnet, Mill Hill and Edgware to the southern district of Morden. The Northern Line serves many important railway stations, and has connections with all the other Underground lines. It has a length of 36 miles and serves 50 stations. More than 250,000,000 passengers ride the Northern Line each year. It is the Black Line on the Tube map.

Tourist attractions on the Northern Line

  • The Royal Air Force Museum London, where a collection of over 100 aircraft of the Royal Air Force is exposed, is located on Hendon Aerodrome, very close to Colindale tube station.
  • Camden Market, one of the most touristic markets of London and the London Zoo, the oldest scientific zoological complex in the world, opened in 1828, are accessible from Camden Town station.
  • Leicester Square, a touristic pedestrian square where stand the Odeon Leicester Square and the Empire Leicester Square cinemas, famous for hosting many film premières, is located close from Leicester Square Underground station.
  • Cleopatra’s Needle, one of the three ancient Egyptian Obelisk with the ones erected in Paris and New York, the Royal Air Force Memorial, dedicated to the RAF members killed during the 2 World Wars, the Savoy Chapel, an interesting church dedicated to St John the Baptist and the Playhouse Theatre, a West End theatre previously used as a live performance recording studio, where played many of the greatest British artists of the 60s and 70s, stand at walking distance from Embankment station.
  • The London Eye, the famous Ferris wheel symbol of the English capital city is located next to Waterloo tube station.
  • The Oval, an international cricket stadium established in 1845, which can be considered as the reference among other cricket fields, stands, as its name suggests, close to Oval Underground station.
  • The Morden Hall Park, a beautiful park and garden around the River Wandle and the Baitul Futuh Mosque, Great Britain´s largest mosque complex are accessible from Morden station.

 

Northern Line stations

  • High Barnet is the northern terminus of the High Barnet branch of the line. Travelcard Zone 5. Wheelchair accessible.
  • Totteridge & Whetstone is located in the area of Whetstone. Travelcard Zone 4.
  • Woodside Park station is located in the middle of the residential area of Woodside Park. There are no commercial stores at proximity. Travelcard Zone 4. Wheelchair accessible.
  • West Finchley tube station is situated in the area of Finchey, as its name indicates. Travelcard Zone 4. Wheelchair accessible.
  • Mill Hill East is the terminus and only station of the Mill Hill East branch of the line. Travelcard Zone 4.
  • Fichley Central Underground station is located in the Church End area of Finchley. Travelcard Zone 4. Wheelchair accessible.
  • East Finchley station is a Grade II listed building, located in East Finchley. Travelcard Zone 3.
  • Highgate tube station is located very close to Highgate Village, which gives it its name. Travelcard Zone 3.
  • Archway station is located, as its name suggests, in the centre of the area of Archway. Travelcard Zone 2-3.
  • Tufnell Park Underground station is situated at the junction of the London Borough of Islington and the London Borough of Camden. Travelcard Zone 2.
  • Kentish Town tube station stands at the corner of Kentish Town Road and Leighton Road. Travelcard Zone 2.
  • Edgware is the terminus station of the Edgware branch of the Northern Line. Travelcard Zone 5. Wheelchair accessible.
  • Burnt Oak tube station is located in the suburban area of Burnt Oak, which gives it its name. Travelcard Zone 4.
  • Colindale is the closest Underground station to the Royal Air Force Museum London. Travelcard Zone 4.
  • Hendon Central station stands in the area of Hendon. It is a Grade II listed building. Travelcard Zone 3-4. Wheelchair accessible.
  • Brent Cross station is located in the area of Golders Green. It is also a Grade II listed building. Travelcard Zone 3.
  • Golders Green Underground station is the second station situated in the area which holds the same name. Travelcard Zone 3. Wheelchair accessible.
  • Hampstead tube station is located in the area of Hampstead Village. Travelcard Zone 2-3.
  • Belsize Park station is located in the area which gives it its name. Travelcard Zone 2.
  • Chalk Farm Underground station is situated very close to Camden Town. Travelcard Zone 2.
  • Camden Town is one of the busiest stations of the London Underground Network. It stands at walking distance from Camden Market. Travelcard Zone 2.
  • Mornington Crescent is situated at the corner of Camden High Street and Hampstead Road. Travelcard Zone 2.
  • Euston tube station is connected to Euston railway station, which stands just above it. Travelcard Zone 1.
  • Warren Street station is located just opposite to University College Hospital. Travelcard Zone 1.
  • Goodge Street Underground station stands on Tottenham Court Road. Travelcard Zone 1.
  • Tottenham Court Road tube station is located at St Giles Circus. Travelcard Zone 1.
  • Leicester Square station stands on Charing Cross Road, at walking distance from Leicester Square, which gives it its name. Travelcard Zone 1.
  • Charing Cross Underground station is located in Trafalgar Square, in the City of Westminster. Travelcard Zone 1.
  • Embankment tube station is situated in the City of Westminster, on the north bank of the River Thames. Travelcard Zone 1.
  • Waterloo Undeground station is connected to the London Waterloo railway station. It is one of the busiest stations of the London Undeground network. Travelcard Zone 1.
  • King’s Cross St. Pancras tube station serves both London King’s Cross and St Pancras railway stations. Travelcard Zone 1. Wheelchair accessible.
  • Angel station is known for being close to different Off West End theatres on Islington High Street. It has the longest escalator of the whole London Undeground network, with 318 steps. Travelcard Zone 1.
  • Old Street Underground station is located at the corner of Old Street and City Road. Travelcard Zone 1.
  • Moorgate is connected to the central railway terminus of London Moorgate inside the City of London. Travelcard Zone 1.
  • Bank is connected to the Monument tube station. They form together one of the busiest complex of the whole London Underground network. Travelcard Zone 1.
  • London Bridge is located close to the southern bank of the River Thames. It is the only station of the London Underground network to have London in its name. Travelcard Zone 1.
  • Borough station stands at the corner of Borough High Street and Marshalsea Road. Travelcard Zone 1. Wheelchair accessible.
  • Elephant & Castle Underground station is situated in the London Borough of Southwark. Travelcard Zone 1-2.
  • Kennington tube station stands on Kennington Park Road. Travelcard Zone 2.
  • Oval station is named as per the cricket ground located right next to it, The Oval. Travelcard Zone 2.
  • Stockwell station is located in the district of the same, in South London. Travelcard Zone 2.
  • Clapham North is one of the 3 stations of the Northern Line to be located in the district of Clapham. Travelcard Zone 2.
  • Clapham Common, as stated in its name, is located in Clapham. Travelcard Zone 2.
  • Clapham South is also located in Clapham, at the corner of Balham Hill and Nightingale Lane. Travelcard Zone 2-3.
  • Balham tube station is located in the area which gives it its name. Travelcard Zone 3.
  • Tooting Bec Underground station is situated in the district of Tooting. Travelcard Zone 3.
  • Tooting Broadway is the second station located in Tooting. Travelcard Zone 3.
  • Colliers Wood station stands at the corner of Merton High Street and Christchurch Road in South London. Travelcard Zone 3.
  • South Wimbledon tube station is located at the junction of Merton High Street and Morden Road. Travelcard Zone 3-4.
  • Morden Underground station is the southern terminus of the Northern Line. Travelcard Zone 4.

 

The Northern Line serves different important transportation sites

  • London Euston is served by Euston tube station. You can take there a train to the north of the country, Liverpool and Manchester in particular, and further to Scotland.
  • Charing Cross railway station is connected to Charing Cross Underground station. Different destination in the Southeast part of England are served there.
  • London Waterloo railway central terminus is located at Waterloo tube station. You can travel there to southern destinations.
  • London King’s Cross is served by King’s Cross St. Pancras Underground station. You can take there a train to northern directions and Scotland in particular.
  • St Pancras International is also located close to King’s Cross St. Pancras station. The Eurostar, that you can take to Paris or Brussels, stop there. A train line also serves both Gatwick Airport and Luton Airport.
  • London Bridge railway station is served by the tube station of the same name. Gatwick and Luton airports are also accessible by train from there.

The Northern line runs every day of the week including Saturdays, Sundays and holidays.

First Service

The first service leaves High Barnet Underground station at 5:22 from Monday to Saturday, and at 6:54 on Sundays, Mill Hill East Underground station at 5:25 from Monday to Saturday, and at 7:11 on Sundays, Edgware Underground station at 5:22 from Monday to Saturday, and at 7:05 on Sundays, and Morden Underground station at 5:15 from Monday to Saturday, and at 6:56 on Sundays.

Last Service

The last service leaves High Barnet Underground station at 00:50 from Monday to Saturday, and at 00:00 on Sundays, Mill Hill East Underground station at 00:54 from Monday to Saturday, and at 00:00 on Sundays, Edgware Underground station at 00:45 from Monday to Saturday, and at 00:00 on Sundays, and Morden Underground station at 00:05 from Monday to Saturday, and at 23:10 on Sundays.
